6th Annual Lake County Wellness Celebration (LCWC) OCT. 4th



LAKE COUNTY WELLNESS ENTHUSIASTS- Join UI Extension, Lake County Unit, to CELEBRATE LAKE COUNTY! Our Families, Farms, locally grown Food and mind/body Fitness.

Start the celebration by building your strength in the 5k Run/Walk on the Prairie and Kids Runs. At the festival, Master Gardeners 4-H clubs and Extension families and friends are invited to taste the robust flavors of prepared locally grown food and network with 15 local farmers and 40 organizations that promote healthy living, open space, or gardening, or grow or prepare locally grown food.

WHY CELEBRATE FAMILY, FARM, FOOD & FITNESS? We all seek total wellness for our families, from the food we eat, for our body, our minds, our land, our community. Our county has so much to celebrate and this is a wonderful event and setting for such.

Celebration partners are Prairie Crossing Charter School, Lake Forest Hospital, Liberty Prairie Conservancy, Lake County High Schools Technology Campus, Prairie Crossing Learning Farm.

Materials
Soil, compost, mulch
We will be able to prepay for supplies and have them hold the supplies until next year. I ordered 5 cuyd of leaf mulch to be delivered 06/05/09. I ordered 5 cuyds of container mix with compost 50/50 mix. We need to discuss tools that we may need. I purchased two of the weed tool that Julie brought.

Raised beds and flower beds
Three new raised beds were assembled filled and planted Materials for two more raised beds have been purchased and put together by Larry. These beds will be for tomatoes, zucchini and cucumbers. Beds will be completed for completion next Saturday. I have asked the Township office if they could send us four people on Saturday.

GTW Events
Earth Day, Music and Art Festival, Closing Event, Educational Event. Music and Art festival will be a fundraiser.
Other events will be scheduled. A fundraising event with Michael Kelsey will be on August 9th.

Website
Update website to reflect the changes we have taken. Funders will be looking at an out of date website.
I will provide website changes by June 25. I would appreciate each of you to provide me with website changes that you would like made. After I have provided my changes, please review them and let me know if the changes have made our website better.

Fundraisers
A letter to local business has been drafted but not finalized. This letter will be sent out by June 15. Please provide me with names of businesses that you feel should be added to our list.

Plants
I picked up the plants from Midwest Groundcovers. Please see the table below. I will ask Wadsworth Feed for plants next week. I will provide zucchini plants and cucumber plants for planting this Saturday. Someone has the sunflower seeds that I ordered. We will plant these this weekend. I will purchase pumpkin plants.

Seeds
Dan Traynoff has a greenhouse and has offered to start our seeds.
Dan will bring flats of plants for planting this Saturday. We still have calla lilies that need to be planted.

Trees
Please provide me with a list of possible trees we could use.
I am working with Care of Trees regarding free or reduced rate trees.

Statuettes
We will not purchase statues this year..

Radio shows
We will discuss possible radio shows at our next meeting.

Education
We are working with The Academy of Our Lady school after school club. They have helped at the garden twice this spring. The First Baptist Church will host a four-week ‘Summer Experience’, which will include time at the garden. I have asked Julie Dodds if she would like to partner with them. I have helped Andrew Cooke Magnet School with finding a company that would repair their greenhouse.

Miscellaneous
I will pick up the sign from Signs Now regarding a sign indicating the time of workdays.

Budget
Grant money needs to be spent by June 30, 2009.

Parking Lot: Com Ed and the use of the land under the power lines for growing food or grains. Ravines, and locally grown food.

WOW (Working on Waukegan)





The city is working to raise the
environmental awareness of its citizens by creating a group that would organize
projects for volunteers to work on. The first event is this Saturday from
9-12. Please forward the email I sent you to anyone that may be interested in
‘working on Waukegan’.



Materials



Do we have enough soil, compost
and wood chips to get us through the end of May?



I ordered 5 cu yds of compost and container mix. I purchased a garden
cart, 6 buckets, 1 75 foot garden hose, 3 75foot soaker hoses, 2 60 foot
soaker hoses and a hose ? Router to connect the
soaker hoses to the regular hose.



New raised bed and flower bed



Julie Dodds
has taken the offer to work to create one of the new raised beds and work on
an existing flowerbed.



Julie will guide volunteers to
the creation of the raised beds. She will also work on one of the flowerbeds.

events will be scheduled during the summer. We will work with Larry to
schedule a music Event in August or September.

Plants



I will begin the search for free
plants in April and May. Please let me know what we would need.



I have sent letters to Jamaican Gardens,
Gurnee Garden Center,
Larsen’s Florist, and Midwest Groundcovers. I will try to call each of these
before the weekend. I will pick up flowers from Chicago Botanic Gardens on 05/18/09.



Seeds



Dan Traynoff
has a greenhouse and has offered to start our seeds.



Dan has picked up the seeds and
will begin to grow them in his greenhouse so that we will have small plants
to plant in May. I purchased strawberry plants to plant this weekend. I also
have herbs for planning.



Trees



Please provide me with a list of
possible trees we could use.



Margaret Martin provided us with a
list of trees that we should look at. If anyone would like to take the role
of calling for trees should contact me. I will contact The Care of Trees came
out the end of last week. The will either provide us with free tree or
provide them to us for a discount.

Radio shows









DK Environmental and EarthWild
Gardens
did a pod cast
show last Wednesday. Cheryl Pytlarz and other
members of the group would like to run a 10 series program on issues such as how
to identify where to put your garden, how to start seeds, which seeds should
be direct seeded, canning and so many more.



Education









We are working with The Academy
of Our Lady school after school club will help at the garden the last Thursday
of the month.

Volunteers Needed
